Description
In the middle of the 19th century, mining in the Harz Mountains of Germany suffered a major crisis due to intense competition. As a consequence many of these mines and metal works, most of which belonged to the state, were subsequently sold to private investors who modernized them. But one thing was still missing: the railway. Without it, transportation costs were so high that mining in the Harz Mountains would have remained unprofitable.
Railway companies were formed during the next decades. These companies built a connected network of railway lines through the mountains to deal with the ever increasing goods traffic. Passenger services also flourished and supported tourism in the Harz Mountains.
This history is infused throughout Harzbahn 1873 as players reenact these historical events by running the mines, works, and railways of the region.
